At university, you can explore your interests inside and outside of the classroom.

You will have opportunities to attend social events or join a student club. You might also like to play extracurricular sports or, if you live on campus, become involved in your residence community.

In this section, you will find more about student life at uOttawa.

Orientation Week

Welcome Week is your time to discover uOttawa. The week is packed with activities to make your first week on campus truly memorable, including a back-to-school concert (uO Show), uO Picnik, street shows, BBQ, movie nights and more.

The Indigenous Resource Centre (IRC) also hosts an Indigenous Orientation that highlights programs and services available to Indigenous students. The orientation also includes:

  • campus tours,
  • talks from current students,
  • meet and greets with staff, faculty and members of the community, such as Traditional Knowledge Keepers, and
  • giveaways.

Clubs and Societies

General Clubs

With more than 175 student clubs on campus, you have many opportunities to explore your interests and meet new people.

If you cannot find a club that suits you or if you have an idea for a new club, feel free to create your own. Student clubs include:

  • Fashion by uOttawa
  • the Ski and Snowboard Club
  • the Coffee and Biscotti Literary Society

The Indigenous Students Association (ISA) also meets at the IRC and helps to organize events. There are a variety of positions and roles in the ISA.

Student Union

At uOttawa, you are represented by the University of Ottawa’s Students’ Union.

Your student union plays an important role at university. The union advocates on behalf of students on campus and in the community. Members may also organize your Orientation Week and student clubs.

Varsity Athletics

The university is home to the Gee-Gees varsity sports that range from basketball to swimming. The uOttawa Gee-Gees participate in both Ontario University Athletics and Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

Recreation and Intramurals

You can explore recreational sports and leagues, regardless of your skill level. Recreational sports include ball hockey, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. They are a great way to meet people and stay active, whether you are continuing to play a sport or starting a new one.

Access Service

If you have a disability that requires academic accommodation and support, Academic Accommodations Service is available to help.

Email the Academic Accommodations Service office as soon as possible to ensure the appropriate supports are in place for you at the beginning of the school year.

The Career Corner offers services and resources in career development, such as career counselling and job search tools to assist you during school and after graduation.

Protection Services helps make uOttawa campuses safe, and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round.

Programs include:

  • Foot Patrol
  • STOP THEFT (designed to prevent thefts of laptops)
  • Self-defence courses (called RAD) designed for women
